For the second year in a row, Chilliwack will be represented at the world hip-hop championships in Las Vegas. That right was earned by The Franchise, a group of eight dancers from Project Dance aged 10 to 13, when an outstanding qualifying round propelled them to Las Vegas July 26 to 31, to compete amongst the world’s best in hip-hop. The win was a brilliant capper to a great competition season for Project Dance, beginning with the Chilliwack Music & Dance Festival, followed by Dance Power in Chilliwack, Rising Star in Mission, the Surrey Dance Festival, Synergy in Surrey and 5678 Showtime in Surrey. Among the multitude of placements, high-score trophies and bursaries, 10-year-old Halle Konrad emerged as the provincial representative. She competed for the provincial junior title in Kamloops the week of June 6. “There are too many accomplishments to do everyone justice” said Project Dance owner/director, Amanda Quinton. “In only our third year of operation, we are a force to be reckoned with.

Commitment to their craft was also evidenced in the recent Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet exams, where 75 percent of those tested earned “distinction.” “I’m constantly amazed by these young dancers,” said Quinton. “Whether they are on the world stage in front of thousands of spectators, or dancing on a small school stage for a group of elementary school students, they consistently perform with professionalism and a great sense of teamwork.”

Dancers in The Franchise will be hard at work fund-raising in the coming weeks to prepare for the Las Vegas competition. Any community support would be appreciated.
