Hip-Hop Producer Sues Lady Gaga’s Songwriter/Producer For Millions (Documents)

A veteran Hip-Hop producer has filed a lawsuit against Lady Gaga’s producer Rob Fusari and his company Rob Fusari Productions over several of the pop singer’s hit singles. Calvin Gaines is a Hip-Hop producer who started out working with New York legends like MC Lyte, Stetsasonic, Salt-N-Pepa, Ultramagnetic MC’s and others. On June 15th, Gaines filed a $1,000,000 dollar lawsuit in United States District Court, Southern District of New York, claiming he was cheated out of credit and royalties for co-authoring Lady Gaga’s hit single’s “Paparazzi,” “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich” and “Disco Heaven.” According to the lawsuit, Fusari and Gaines met each other around 1997, when they co-authored and co-produced five songs for Brandy, which were never released. The pair went on to co-write and co-author Destiny’s Child’s smash singles “No No No” “You’re the Only One.” The songwriting duo later linked to write the three songs in question for Lady Gaga. According to Gaines, he is 20% owner of the copyrights in the songs, but Fusari allegedly transferred Gaines’ interests in the compositions to Sony/ATV songs. According to Gaines’ lawsuit, he has never received a penny in connection with his co-authorship of the three hit singles.
Gaines claims he is owed millions from royalties from Lady Gaga’s The Fame album, which has sold over 3 million copies in the United States. The record has also been certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum in 25 other countries.

Can Hip-Hop And Pop Culture Exist Without Black Music Executives

For years, African-Americans have defined what is cool and trendy in American pop culture. But some are now saying that African-Americans are no longer needed as music executives, because of the similarities of Black and white artists these days.
While former music executives Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Sylvia Rhone have been instrumental in ushering-in a slew of African-American artists into mainstream media, many labels believe that they don’t necessarily need African-American executives to sell hip-hop or pop records. “Now that Rihanna and Katy Perry are so similar, why do you need a black executive?” said hip-hop pioneer Russel Simmons.
Some argue that African-Americans still play a crucial role:
“You still need soul,” says one of the rare black women in mid-management.
Adds a black lawyer: “As creative people, African-Americans have led the charge in determining what is hot in pop culture. Let’s not forget the big picture. We’ve been the tastemakers on the cutting edge and telling the world what’s hot.”

For the second year in a row, Chilliwack will be represented at the world hip-hop championships in Las Vegas. That right was earned by The Franchise, a group of eight dancers from Project Dance aged 10 to 13, when an outstanding qualifying round propelled them to Las Vegas July 26 to 31, to compete amongst the world’s best in hip-hop. The win was a brilliant capper to a great competition season for Project Dance, beginning with the Chilliwack Music & Dance Festival, followed by Dance Power in Chilliwack, Rising Star in Mission, the Surrey Dance Festival, Synergy in Surrey and 5678 Showtime in Surrey. Among the multitude of placements, high-score trophies and bursaries, 10-year-old Halle Konrad emerged as the provincial representative.
